i've heard good things...

if you're reading this, chances are: you've heard about pilates. you have that friend that swears by it, or you've read about it in a million different places. but... what is it? every pilates teacher will tell a different story based on their experience. here's our version of a continually evolving tradition of dynamic movement practice.

pilates was invented by a german immigrant to the u.s. named joseph pilates. he originally dubbed his novel form of exercise 'contrology,' which reflected his deep curiosity around movement and human's ability to control the body. he came up with all sorts of crazy ways to move inspired by dance, gymnastics, calisthenics, and even yoga. an inventor in more ways than one, he also designed a bunch of strange devices that he dreamed would challenge the body differently than traditional forms of strength training.

since mr. pilates' death, those that have carried his method forward have played and danced with it in such a way that it looks very different from the orininal method; but although pilates has changed a lot since the days of 'joe's gym,' pilates is still a place for exploration of movement and a locus for meeting the challenges of strength, range of motion, and control.

at redwood pilates, you can expect a full body work out that is adapted to your specific goals. we'll be drawing from some of the original 'contrology' repertoire as well as more recent interpretations of the repertoire influenced by dance culture, physical therapy, optimal motor learning theory, and the science of strength training.
